Using Sun Simulations to Save Money on Glass

Don’t guess. Simulate.

Architects love 3D videos. “Look at the shadows!” It’s pretty. But use it for engineering, not just for instagram.

What the video actually tells you

Watch the west side. Does the sun hit the glass for 4+ hours? YES: You need Double Low-E Glass (expensive). NO: You can use cheap glass.

Saving 300k Pesos

Most salesmen say: “Put Low-E on everything!” That’s lazy. Why put expensive heat-blocking glass on the North side that never sees the sun? Or under a huge overhang?

My Strategy:

  1. West/South: Premium Glass. Double Glazed. Low-E. Thermal Break. (Spend the money here).
  2. North/East: Standard Double Glazed. Maybe single Low-E if cheap. (Save money here).
  3. Protected Windows: If it’s always in shadow… why tint it? Leave it clear. Enjoy the view.

The “Thermal Break” Question

“Sir, do I need thermal break aluminum?” Look at the simulation. Does the sun hit the frame? If the aluminum gets hot, it becomes a radiator inside your room. If the frame stays in the shade… standard aluminum is fine.

Summary

The sun is predictable. It moves the same way every year. Don’t let the sales guy scare you into buying upgrades you don’t need. Check the video. If it glows yellow… protect it. If it stays blue… save your cash.
