I walked inside my house before building it (VR)

2D Plans Lie

On paper, a 3x3 meter room looks big. In reality? It’s a shoebox. You only realize this AFTER the walls are painted. Too late.

Enter VR ( Virtual Reality)

I bought a Meta Quest (like $300). I exported my house plan from the architect. I put on the goggles. And I literally walked through my living room.

What I changed immediately

  1. The Ceiling Height. I thought 2.4 meters was fine. In VR, I felt claustrophobic. Changed it to 2.8m. Best decision ever.
  2. The Kitchen Island. It was too close to the fridge. I couldn’t open the virtual fridge door without hitting the island. Caught this 6 months before buying the actual fridge.
  3. The Window Height. The window was perfect on the drawing, but in VR, I realized I couldn’t see the garden while sitting on the sofa. Lowered it 20cm.

How to do it

You don’t need to be a tech genius.

  1. Ask architect for the 3D model (.fbx or .obj).
  2. Download SimLab VR (Free version).
  3. Put on headset.
  4. Walk.

Is it worth it?

The headset costs 15k-20k pesos. Breaking a concrete wall because you hate the size? 50k pesos. Do the math.
