Why your tiles are turning white (Calcification)

The “Chalk” Stain

You water your plants. Two hours later, there’s a white ring on the tile. You scrub it. It comes back tomorrow. Welcome to Hard Water.

It’s not dirt. It’s rock.

Our tap water is full of minerals (Calcium and Magnesium). When the water evaporates, the rock stays behind. That’s the white stuff.

How to kill it

Soap won’t work. You need acid.

1. Vinegar (The cheap way) Soak a rag in vinegar. Lay it on the stain. Wait 10 minutes. Scrub. Most of the time, this works.

2. Muriatic Acid (The nuclear option) Dilute it! (1 part acid, 10 parts water). Wear gloves. Wear a mask. Don’t breathe it in. This will remove the stain. It might also damage the grout, so be fast.

Prevention

Saucers. Put a plastic dish under every pot. Sealer. Apply a stone/tile sealer to your porch tiles. It stops the water from soaking in. Rainwater. Use rain water for plants. It has zero minerals. (Bonus: plants love it more than tap water).
