Waterproofing a Roof Deck (The Real Way)

Why paint fails

You buy a bucket of “Roof Seal”. You paint it on. It looks nice and white. 6 months later, there’s a crack in the concrete. The paint stretches… and snaps. Leak.

The Secret: Membrane

You need something that moves. Torch-on Bitumen. It’s a thick roll of asphalt. You melt it with a flamethrower (literally) and stick it to the concrete. It’s thick. It’s rubbery. If the concrete cracks underneath, the bitumen stretches.

The “Fillet”

Most leaks happen at the corner (Floor meets Wall). You can’t bend bitumen 90 degrees sharply. It cracks. You need to create a curve (cant strip) with mortar at the corner. Smooth transition.

The Protection

Bitumen hates the sun (UV). If you leave it exposed, it dries out. You need to cover it. Tiles? Gravel? A concrete topping? Protect the membrane, and it will last 20 years. Leave it exposed, it lasts 2.

Summary

Don’t use paint. Use fire. (Or hire a guy who knows how to use fire).
