Stone-Coated vs Regular GI Sheets (Is it worth it?)

The Sales Pitch

“Sir, Stone Coated is elegant! It looks like tiles! It’s quiet when it rains!” True. It looks like clay tiles. It is quieter (the stone grit dampens the ping-ping-ping sound). But…

The problem with “Stone Coated”

It’s just a metal sheet with glue and sand on it. 1. The Algae Magnet The surface is rough. Dust gets stuck in the rough surface. Water makes it muddy. Moss and Algae grow. After 3 years, your “Premium Red” roof is “Swamp Green”. (And you can’t scrub it because the stones fall off).

2. The Maintenance Regular painted GI sheets? Rain washes them clean. If they fade, you paint them. Stone coated? You can’t repaint them easily. You have to respray the glue and stone.

3. The Rust It’s harder to spot rust spots because the stone hides them. By the time you see the leak, the sheet is eaten through.

My Preference?

Long Span Rib-Type (Pre-painted). It’s boring. But it sheds water fast. It self-cleans. And if it leaks, you can find the hole easily. Also, it’s half the price. Spend the extra money on insulation instead.
