In Mindanao, they just found a huge batch of “substandard rebars”. Basically, fake steel. If you use this in your columns… good luck in the next earthquake.
You don’t need a lab. You need a scale.
1. Weigh it. Bring a portable hanging scale to the hardware store. Weigh a 1-meter sample.
If it’s lighter? It’s “undersized”. They sell it as 10mm, but it’s actually 9mm. That 10% difference means your house is 20% weaker.
2. The Magnet Test Rebar is iron. Magnets stick to it. If the magnet barely sticks? It causes it has too many impurities. Garbage.
3. The Bend Test Grab a 10mm bar. Try to bend it with your hands (use a pipe for leverage if you are small). It should be tough. If it bends like a wire hanger? It’s too soft. If it snaps instantly? It’s too brittle.
Don’t trust the sticker. Don’t trust the hardware store guy saying “Sir, standard yan!” Weigh it. If the weight is wrong, walk away.
