PVC vs Metal Conduits (Why I chose PVC)

The “Metal is Better” Myth

Old school electricians love metal pipes (EMT/IMC). “Sir, it’s industrial! It’s strong! Rats can’t eat it!” Sure. But you know what eats it? Rust.

Why I went PVC (Orange/Red pipes)

1. Humidity is killer We live in the Philippines. It is wet. Metal conduits rust. Period. Especially near the beach. Once they rust, the sharp edges cut the wire insulation. Short circuit -> Fire.

2. The Cost Metal is like 3x the price. Plus you need special benders, couplings, and locknuts. Labor is slower (they have to measure and bend perfectly). PVC? Cut it with a knife. Glue it. Done. Save that money for your tiles.

3. Grounding “But Daniel, metal acts as a ground!” Technically yes. But relying on a rusty pipe for your safety ground is scary. Just run a separate green wire inside the PVC. It’s safer and reliable.

When to use Metal?

  • Exposed areas (garage surface mount) where a car might hit it.
  • Outside main service entrance (Meralco requires this usually).

Summary

For inside the walls and ceiling? Use high-quality PVC (Moldex or Emerald). Don’t let them sell you the thin white pipes that crack when you look at them. Get the thick orange electrical ones (Schedule 40 if you can). Your wallet will thank you.
