My "Bunker Style" Roof Design

Why standard roofs fail

Truss. Purlin. Sheet. Connected by screws. Wind hits -> Screws loosen -> Sheet flies away. Or wind hits -> Truss lifts -> Whole roof flies away.

The Theory: Make it a Boat

I wanted a roof that acts like a boat hull. Solid. One piece.

The Design

1. Steel Frame Rigid tube frame (Red Oxide painted 3 times). Welded to the beams. (Not just bolted).

2. Marine Plywood Decking Yes, wood on the roof. 3/4 inch Marine Plywood screwed to the frame. Now you have a solid surface. Wind can’t get “under” the sheets because there are no sheets yet.

3. Fiberglass Armor We coated the plywood in Fiberglass (Resin + Mat). 3 layers. It’s basically a surfboard on top of your house. Seamless. No screw holes.

The Result

Typhoon Odette hit. My neighbors lost their GI sheets. My roof? Didn’t even vibrate. A coconut hit it and bounced off.

Pros/Cons

Pros: Indestructible. Leak proof (if done right). Quiet. Cons: Expensive. The resin smells high when applying. You need a boat builder, not a roofer. Is it overkill? Yes. Do I sleep well during typhoons? Also yes.
