Marine Grade Hinges (Why Blum isn't enough)

150m from the sea = Rust.

I’m building a villa in Cebu. 150m from the ocean. Contractor says: “Use Blum. Everyone uses Blum.” I love Blum. But here’s the secret: Standard Blum hinges are steel. Nickel-plated steel. They are NOT stainless. Put them in a coastal kitchen? Rust in 3 years.

The “Stainless” Lie

Go to a hardware store. “Sir, stainless finish!” “Finish” means paint. Underneath? It’s cheap steel. Magnet test it. If the magnet sticks hard… it’s gonna rust.

What actually works?

1. Hettich Veosys (Germany) Actual 304 Stainless Steel. Soft close built-in. Rated for outdoor use. I’m using this for the main kitchen.

2. Sugatsune (Japan) Series 180SUS. Bulletproof. They even use resin for the damper casing so it doesn’t corrode. Expensive, but legitimate.

3. The “Marine” Option (316 Grade) If you are doing an outdoor kitchen or pool house… 304 isn’t enough. You need 316 Stainless (Marine Grade). Hafele makes one. Chinese brands (like Xinxing Marine) make them for boats. They look ugly/industrial, but they never die.

My Strategy (The Hybrid Approach)

I’m not made of money. I can’t put $20 hinges on everything. Indoor Kitchen: Hettich Veosys (304 SS). Outdoor/Pool: Boat hardware (316 SS). Drawers: 304 SS slides (if I can find them, otherwise I accept they will rust eventually).

Summary

Don’t let them install “Standard” hinges near the beach. Ask for the data sheet. Look for “SUS304” or “AISI316”. If it just says “Stainless”… it’s a trap.
