How to build a mosquito-proof house

The Public Enemy #1

In the Philippines, mosquitoes aren’t annoying. They are dangerous. Dengue. Malaria. You need to design your house to fight them.

1. Screens are non-negotiable.

“I want an open air villa!” No you don’t. You will be eaten alive at 5pm. Screen every window. Use Stainless Steel Mesh (Security + Bug proof). Nylon mesh rots in the sun after 2 years.

2. The Color of your House

Mosquitoes love dark corners. If you paint your walls dark grey (very trendy right now)… You are creating a hangout spot. Paint the exterior light colors. They hate it.

3. The Seal

Door sweeps. Those little bristles at the bottom of the door? Install them. Mosquitoes will crawl under the door.

4. The Gutter

This is where they are born. Leaf falls in gutter -> Water gets trapped -> Mosquito laid eggs. Use a Gutter Guard (mesh over the gutter). Or better yet… don’t use gutters. Use a concrete trench drain on the ground. Gravity never clogs.

Summary

You can’t kill them all. But you can keep them out. Screens on windows. Sweeps on doors. No standing water. Simple.
