How to Actually Buy Stuff on Alibaba (Without Getting Scammed)

Why Buy Factory Direct?

Because everything you buy at the mall comes from China anyway. You’re just paying for the middleman’s Toyota Fortuner. Go direct. Save 40-60%. But… you have to be smart.

The Safety Rules

1. Trade Assurance Only If a supplier asks to pay via Western Union or bank transfer… RUN. Only pay through Alibaba using “Trade Assurance”. If they mess up the order, Alibaba holds the money. No Trade Assurance = No Deal.

2. Chat on the App Don’t use WhatsApp. Don’t use WeChat. Keep all promises in the Alibaba chat. A screenshot of a WhatsApp promise means nothing to Alibaba support. A screenshot of the Alibaba chat is evidence.

The Strategy

1. The “Sample” Trick You want 500 tiles. They say MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity) is 1000. Tell them: “I am a developer testing quality for a project.” Ask to buy a “sample” first. Usually, they will sell you a small amount.

2. DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) This is the magic word. “Do you offer DDP shipping to Manila?” If yes: You pay one price, and it arrives at your door. No customs headache. No broker. If no: You need a forwarder (like Supcart, Sea Tiger, or CargoBoss).

My Shipping Cheat Sheet

  • Luzon: Supcart.
  • Visayas/Mindanao: Sea Tiger. (They are slower but handle the islands better).
  • Small stuff: Lalamove (once it lands in the port).

Summary

Don’t be scared of China sourcing. Just assume everyone is trying to cut corners until proven otherwise. Order samples. Test them. Then order the big batch.
