EPS Blocks (Building with Styrofoam?)

Building a house out of… Styrofoam?

It sounds ridiculous. Like something from the Three Little Pigs. But EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) is actually legit. In the Philippines, we usually see it as “Geofoam” or part of ICF (Insulated Concrete Forms).

What is it?

It’s just high-density styrofoam. But big. Like, car-sized blocks. And strong enough to drive a truck over (if you distribute the weight).

The 3 Big Uses

1. Lightweight Fill ( raising the ground) This is the cheat code. Say you have a sloping lot. You want to raise the garden by 2 meters. If you use soil (tambak)? It’s heavy. It pushes against your retaining wall. The wall cracks. Use EPS Blocks. They weigh nothing. Stack them up. Pour a thin slab on top. Zero stress on the wall. We used this in a project in Antipolo where the soil was too soft for heavy gravel.

2. Insulation (ICF) I wrote about ICF separately, but basically: EPS blocks are the mold. You pour concrete inside. The foam stays forever. Result: A cooler house. (Just watch out for ants… they love nesting in warm foam).

3. Roof Decks Want to slope your roof deck so water drains? Don’t pour angled concrete (heavy). Cut tapered EPS blocks. Glue them down. Waterproof over them. Lightweight. Fast.

The “Anay” (Termite) Problem

Termites don’t eat styrofoam. BUT… they love to tunnel through it to get to the wood in your roof. It’s like a superhighway for them. The Fix: You need “Borate-treated” EPS. Or physical barriers (stainless mesh) at the ground level. Don’t just bury normal packaging foam in the ground.

My Take

For raising floor levels or filling voids? EPS is magic. It solves engineering headaches instantly. For walls? Stick to hollow blocks or pure reinforced concrete unless you really need the insulation and have a specialist contractor. Most local “masons” will look at the foam block and try to attach it with wood glue. disaster.
