Crawlspaces (Why lift your house?)

What is a Crawlspace?

Instead of pouring your floor directly on the dirt (Slab on Grade)… You build a mini-basement. About 1 meter high. Your house sits on top of it.

Why do this in the Philippines?

1. Utilities Access If a pipe leaks under your slab… you have to jackhammer the floor. If a pipe leaks in a crawlspace… you crawl underneath and fix it. Easy.

2. Cooling Air flows under your house. It keeps the floor cool. It keeps the humidity down (if you ventilate it right).

3. Termites You can SEE them. With a slab, termites come up through cracks you can’t see. With a crawlspace, you can force them to build tunnels up the columns… which you can spot and destroy.

The Downside

Cost. You need a suspended slab (beams + deck). It’s more expensive than dumping concrete on the ground. Critters. Snakes. Rats. Spiders. They love crawlspaces. You need to seal it tight with heavy duty mesh screens.

My take

If you have the budget? Build it. Being able to fix a plumbing leak without destroying your Italian tiles… that peace of mind is worth it. Just make sure you waterproof the ground underneath (Vapor Barrier) or your house will smell like damp soil forever.
