Concrete Curing (Don't mess this up)

Watching Concrete Dry (Literally)

So you poured your beams. They look grey. They look hard. You’re done, right? Wrong.

If you let concrete dry too fast in the Philippine sun, it cracks. It’s called “plastic shrinkage”. Basically, the water evaporates before the chemical reaction happens. Result: Weak concrete. Crumbly columns.

The Secret Sauce: Water

You need to keep it wet. Like, really wet. For 7 days. (14 is better, but let’s be realistic).

My preferred method: burlap (Sacks) Get those wet burlap sacks (or old rice sacks). Wrap the columns. Soak them with a hose every morning and evening. It looks ugly. It works perfectly.

“Curing Compounds”

Contractors love this because it’s lazy. They spray some white liquid on the concrete. “Sir, imported curing compound.” Does it work? Yeah, mostly. But if you plan to paint or tile over it later? absolute nightmare. The compound is like wax. Nothing sticks to it. Stick to water and sacks. It’s cheaper.

The “Ice” Trick

If you are pouring a massive slab? Dump ice in the mix. Seriously. High heat = fast cracking. Ice lowers the temp. My neighbor thought I was making a giant halo-halo. But my slab didn’t crack. His did.
