Buying Chinese Aluminum Windows (The Real Guide)

Ordering windows from China? Read this first.

So you want to save money and get better quality. Buying directly from China seems smart. It is. IF you know what you’re doing. If you don’t… you might get a container full of scrap metal.

1. The “Series” Number

Suppliers will say: “Sir, this is 125 Series!” They sound impressive. It just describes the width of the frame (125mm). It doesn’t mean it’s strong. It could be 125mm wide but thin as a soda can.

What you actually ask for: “What is the wall thickness?”

  • 1.2mm = Garbage. (Vibrates in the wind).
  • 1.4mm = Standard commercial.
  • 1.8mm - 2.0mm = Good.
  • 3.0mm = Tank. (Overkill for a house, but nice).

2. “Thermal Break”

Philippine contractors hate this. “Sir, no need thermal break, Philippines is hot, not cold!” Wrong. Thermal break stops the heat from outside frying your AC. It’s a piece of plastic inside the aluminum frame. Without it, your aluminum frame becomes a radiator. Get the thermal break. It’s worth the extra 15%.

3. The Glass Spec (Triple vs Double)

They love to sell “Triple Glazing”. “Sir, soundproof!” Honest opinion? Triple glazing is heavy. Like, really heavy. It kills the rollers (wheels). A good Double Glazed Laminated unit is better. Example: 6mm Glass + PVB + 6mm Glass + Air Space + 6mm Low-E Safe. Strong. lighter than triple.

Low-E Coating: Mandatory. Put it on the surface #2 (inside of the outer pane). If they don’t know what “surface #2” means… run.

4. Hardware (The Handles)

“German Hardware” usually means “Made in China with a German name”. Real German hardware (Siegenia, Roto) is expensive but lasts 20 years. Chinese top brands (CMECH, HOPO) are actually decent now. Just avoid “Kin Long” fakes. (Real Kin Long is good, unauthorized copies break in a week).

5. The “Typhoon” Test

Ask them: “Is this tested for wind load?” If they send you a generic certificate… well, better than nothing. But the real test is the water drainage. Ask for a video of them blasting the window with a hose. If water pools in the track… it will flood your living room during a typhoon.

Pricing (Reality Check)

If they quote you $80 per sqm… it’s trash. Real, good quality thermal break aluminum starts at $180 - $250 per sqm. Add shipping. Add taxes (30%++). It’s still cheaper than local high-end brands, but it’s not “dirt cheap”.

My advice

Order one small window first. A bathroom window. Ship it LCL (Less than Container Load). Inspect it. Bash it. Then order the rest. Don’t gamble 2 million pesos on a PDF catalog.
